Existing both virtually and in the real world, the Shelburne museum began with a vision arising out of the founder's passion for collecting bits of 'Americana' and her sense of appreciation for the 'ordinary.' From those early beginnings it has expanded beyond folk art to include fine art as well. The Shelburne is located a short five mile drive from downtown Burlington.

The Fleming Museum, housed at the University of Vermont, hosts a significant collection of 19,000 artifacts ranging from early Mesopotamia to modern America. The permanent collection is divided into sections: European, American, Non-Western and Ancient.
