ACCESS AND GETTING AROUND

Visitors can access Burlington in a number of ways. People driving into the city reach it by turning off of highway Route 89. The Burlington International Airport is a fully functional airport situated on the east side of Route 89 and is approximately 4 mi (7.4 km) from the city center. From April until November, the Harbor Ferry travels across Lake Champlain transporting visitors and goods between Port Kent, New York and Burlington several times a day. The city also features a Greyhound terminal that connects Burlington to anywhere in the motorcoach company's travel network.

Once arriving to the city, visitors looking to get a taxi or private car ride will appreciate the number of cabs and car services that operate in the city. Travelers who want to explore Burlington independently will be happy to know several car rental companies such as, Budget Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental, and Avis Rent-A-Car have outlets in the city. Finally, the Chittenden County Transportation Authority operates a public transit bus terminal that has several routes servicing the busiest districts in Burlington.

ORIENTATION

Regardless of where they stay, visitors to Burlington will find local attractions are never more than a short drive away. The majority of lodgings are concentrated on two streets that run through the city. The Ethan Allen Highway, which is situated in a north to south direction and Main Street, which runs east to west, are the two roads where visitors will most likely find a hotel. The Lake Champlain waterfront is located on the city's west side, and the University of Vermont campus to the east. Ski and snowboard enthusiasts will be happy to know the Stowe Mountain Resort is only 50 mi (80 km) or an hour-long car-ride away from city center. One of the town's most popular attractions, the Church Street Marketplace stretches over two blocks in downtown Burlington and features over 100 shops, restaurants and professional services.

WHEN TO VISIT

The multifaceted beauty of the Vermont landscape along with its warm, humid summers and brisk but comfortable winters make the state a welcome getaway anytime of the year. Summer temperatures average a comfortable 74 °F (23 °C), which is perfect weather for long day trips exploring the surroundings or relaxing on the lakefront. Winter temperatures hover just above freezing, which make a trip to Stowe Mountain or a cross-country ski expedition through Burlington's scenic environment ideal activity options.

DISTRICTS AND ACCOMODATIONS

Main Street
Burlington's Main Street has a large number of lodging options that cater to any visitor's budget or taste, many of which are just minutes away from popular tourist attractions such as the Lake Champlain waterfront and the Church Street Marketplace. The Courtyard by Marriott, which is positioned just off of Main Street and overlooks the lake, is one such hotel. The city's largest hotel, the Sheraton Burlington Hotel and Conference Center, is also located on the street, halfway between the airport and city center. It is the perfect accommodation choice for visitors accustomed to modern amenities, as it features services and facilities such as a health club, an indoor heated pool and wireless Internet access.

Guests looking to enjoy traditional Vermont hospitality while still being relatively close to the action will be happy to know the street contains several bed and breakfasts such as the Sunset House, the historic Allyn House and the Lang House. All three of these bed and breakfasts are renovated historic homes that are a testament to Vermont's rich history as one of America's oldest states.

People visiting Burlington for the explicit purpose of enjoying one of the several events that take place here throughout the year would also be well advised to consider lodging on Main Street. Generally, the thoroughfare is within close proximity of a number of events. Yearly festivities such as the Discover Jazz Festival which happens every June, is held at several different venues across the city, which makes having a centralized place to stay an ideal choice. Other popular events that take place close to Main Street include the Dragon Boat Festival in August and the Vermont Mozart Festival in July

Similar to Main Street, this main roadway is home to several accommodations. Visitors will find a variety of independently owned and operated inns on the highway, such as the Bel Aire Motel, the Champlain Inn, and the Liberty Inn & Suites. All three of these residencies feature amenities such as outdoor pools, cable television and air-conditioning.

Several bed and breakfasts' make their home on the Ethan Allen. The Willard Street Inn, is a mansion originally built in the late 1880s and was the home of former Vermont State senator, Charles Woodhouse. The bed and breakfast has 14 rooms to choose from and numerous communal rooms to relax in. Another bed and breakfast on this street is the Burlington Redstone. When staying here, travelers will enjoy its Victorian-era decor and a view of Lake Champlain.

Out Of Town
Travelers to the Burlington area who don't want to stay in the heart of the city can seek accommodations in surrounding hamlets such as South Burlington, Essex Junction and Richmond. National hotel chains such as Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn and Rodeway Inn have properties in this area. Of special interest is the popular Inn at Essex resort, which is situated approximately 7mi (11km) from Burlington's city center. The resort is home to a golf course, tennis courts, a heated outdoor pool and most impressively two restaurants operated by students and instructors from the nearby New England Culinary Institute.
